Business Networking’s Greatest Fib

By Keith Woolgar

There is absolutely no doubt the fact that face-to-face business networking is among the most, or even the most valuable means to showcase oneself, ones charity or ones small enterprise.  It is a fact.

Usually, networking is less expensive as compared with conventional advertising, and ties you professionally to your company, right in front of your clients or would-be consumers.  Carry your itinerary to a meeting, book a business lunch right then!  Hours of cold calling and target promoting; stand aside!  Who would not rather meet their customers and prospective customers in an casual, comfortable, non-confrontational setting like a networking event or via a networking group?

Go figure!  Precisely why else would there be countless networking breakfast meetings, networking happy hours, speed networking events (you name it) and more popping up continuously?

Gone are the era of being limited to signing up for chambers of commerce and other service organizations, simply because now you can meet, greet and glad hand other business networkers anytime, seven days a week if you wish to.  Just imagine, BNI and LeTip are networking brand names comprised of thousands of business networkers on their own…it’s a networking world, folks!  Now, with the more recent “online venues” like Facebook, business networking seems to have gone viral as housewives, Realtors, cake bakers and Fortune 500 companies interact by means of the popular “social media”, which was not even a common phrase just three quick years ago.  We as a society network, network, network!

The fib is that “networking” functions.  The fact is , that attending business networking events, signing up for groups, being on Facebook, etc. will not work whatever as a stand alone activity to closing sales or engaging in business.  That is correct, it takes more…

Maybe you have ever come back from the business networking event with a handful of business cards with no resulting leads? Like, zero?  Sure, you have.  Did you ever stop a networking group because “it didn’t work”?  Of course you did.

Fact is, the churn rate (existing users falling away being replaced by fresh paid members) could be around 50% yearly in a given networking organization.  Half dropping out, being replaced by new, enthusiastic newbies, who will in turn drop out aftera lame attempt at making networking work for them.
